Best Tarpon Waters in Florida
What We Fish For
Snook
The Snook is a premier Florida game fish, easily identified by the distinct black lateral line and the powerful “thump” felt when they strike a lure. Captain Mark targets them in mangroves and passes from Spring through Fall, though they retreat to warmer river waters during the winter months.
Red Fish
Redfish are powerful fighters known for their copper hue and the iconic black spot on their tail. Captain Mark finds them year-round in shallow grass flats and oyster bars. While available through the seasons, the “Redfish Run” in late Summer and Fall offers your best shot at a trophy.
Tarpon
The legendary Tarpon, or “Silver King,” is a prehistoric powerhouse famous for its acrobatic, mid-air leaps. Punta Gorda is a world-class destination for these giants, especially during the famous run from April through July. Captain Mark targets them in the deeper channels of the harbor and the iconic Boca Grande Pass.
Speckled Sea Trout
These beautiful silver fish are distinguished by their dark spots and delicate nature. While they are a fragile species, they provide incredible action on light tackle. Captain Mark finds them year-round in the shallow grass flats of Charlotte Harbor, with winter being the prime time to land a massive “gator” trout.
Pompano
AThe Pompano is a small, deep-bodied silver fish prized as one of the finest-tasting catches in Florida waters. They are migratory, moving through the harbor’s sandy patches and along the beaches. Your best chance to hook these delicious fighters is during their peak runs in the Spring and Fall.
Black Drum
A cousin to the Redfish, the Black Drum is known for its size and the distinct vertical bars found on younger fish. They are a hardy species often found lurking around bridge pilings and deep harbor holes. Captain Mark typically targets them during the Winter and Spring months.
Shark
Charlotte Harbor is teeming with various species, including Bull, Blacktip, and Bonnethead sharks. These powerful predators offer an exhilarating challenge for any angler. They are most abundant during the Summer, when the warm water is thick with the baitfish they follow into the harbor.
Mackerel
Often called the “Convict Fish” for their black-and-white stripes, Sheepshead are famous for their human-like teeth used to crush shellfish. They are masters at stealing bait, making them a fun challenge around piers and rock piles. They are most abundant in Winter and early Spring.
Snapper
Snapper fishing is a fan favorite because the action is often fast and furious. Not only are they exciting to catch, but they are also world-class on the dinner table. Because these trips are so popular for both the sport and the harvest, they tend to book up very quickly.
Grouper
Grouper are powerful bottom-dwellers that will try to dive into a hole the moment they are hooked. While massive Grouper are a year-round target at offshore reefs, Captain Mark can often find smaller “nursery” fish within the protection of the harbor for a great light-tackle challenge.
Sheepshead
Often called the “Convict Fish” for their black-and-white stripes, Sheepshead are famous for their human-like teeth used to crush shellfish. They are masters at stealing bait, making them a fun challenge around piers and rock piles. They are most abundant in Winter and early Spring.
Permit
The Permit is the “big brother” to the Pompano—silver, deep-bodied, and incredibly strong. They are a bucket-list species for many fly and light-tackle anglers. Captain Mark finds them patrolling nearshore wrecks and reefs, primarily during the Spring and Summer months.
