What We Fish For
Snapper
Alabama Snapper fishing is extremely popular. The fishing can be fast a furious and the fish is delicious. Book your trips today as these charters fill up fast.
Speckled Sea Trout
Beautiful silver fish with dark spots; they are fragile but very fun to catch on light tackle.
Found in shallow grass flats throughout Charlotte Harbor. They are a reliable catch year-round, though Winter is excellent for larger “gator” trout.
Red Fish
Powerful fighters with a distinct copper color and a black spot near the tail.
Found in the shallow grass flats and around oyster bars year-round. The “Redfish Run” in Late Summer and Fall offers the best chance at trophy sizes.
Shark
Various species including Bull, Blacktip, and Bonnethead.
Abundant in Charlotte Harbor, especially during the Summer months when the water is warm and bait is plentiful.
Sheepshead
Often called “Convict Fish” due to their black and white stripes and human-like teeth used for crushing shells.
Caught around bridges, piers, and rock piles. They are most abundant in Winter and early Spring.
Pompano
A small, silver, deep-bodied fish that is considered one of the best-tasting catches in Florida.
Caught along the beaches and sandy patches in the harbor. Best in Spring and Fall as they migrate through.
Tarpon
Massive, prehistoric-looking fish known for spectacular acrobatic leaps.
Punta Gorda is world-famous for the Tarpon run in April through July, specifically in Boca Grande Pass and the harbor’s deeper channels.
Flounder
Flat, camouflaged fish that hide on the bottom to ambush prey.
Found on sandy bottoms near structures or grass edges, primarily in the Fall during their migration offshore.
Snook
A premier game fish known for the black lateral line running down its side and its explosive “thump” when hitting a lure.
Caught in mangroves, around docks, and in the passes. Best from Spring through Fall; they move into the rivers during winter to stay warm.
Black Drum
Cousins to the Redfish, these fish grow quite large and have vertical bars when young.
Often found near bridges and deep holes in the harbor during Winter and Spring.
Grouper
Heavy-bodied bottom dwellers known for retreating into holes once hooked.
Found on offshore reefs and ledges. Smaller “nursery” grouper can be caught in the harbor, but the big ones are an all-year offshore target.
Permit
Deep-bodied, silver, and incredibly strong. They are the “big brothers” to the Pompano.
Usually found on nearshore wrecks and reefs, especially in Spring and Summer.
Mangrove Snapper
A clever, tasty fish that is dark bronze or gray with a reddish hue.
Found near structures like docks and mangroves. Available year-round, but the bite gets aggressive in the Summer.
Jack Cravelle
The “bullies” of the flats. They travel in schools and fight harder than almost any other fish their size.
Found everywhere in the harbor year-round. Look for “boiling” water where they are feeding on the surface.
